Runway Capacity Enhancement at Hamad International Airport
1 Introduction
1.1 As part of runway capacity enhancement initiative at Hamad International Airport, High Intensity Runway Operation (HIRO) is implemented. This AIRAC AIP Supplement provides detailed information to operators for their necessary dissemination of the information to flight crews.
2 High Intensity Runway Operation (HIRO) for arriving aircraft (Runway 16L/34R and 16R only)
2.1 To achieve maximum landings per hour and reduce go-arounds due to an occupied runway or rapid exit taxiway by a preceding landing aircraft, runway occupancy times must be reduced to a minimum.
2.2 HIRO will be in force when the runway surface condition is dry and adverse weather conditions are not present. ATC will inform via ATIS if HIRO is suspended (Phrase: “High Intensity Runway Operation suspended”).
During HIRO operations, pilots shall only use standard rapid exit taxiways (RET’s) and are encouraged to vacate the landing runway within 60 seconds.
Note. No ninety degree (90°) turns off the runway on A6 or L7, unless advised by ATC.
| Runway ID | Standard Runway Exit | Distance to turnoff* (m) |
|---|
| 16L | A7 | 1895 |
| 34R | A5 | 2006 |
| 16R | L5 | 1971 |
*Distance from threshold to turn off intersection
Notes:
- ATC will expect flights to vacate the runway in accordance with the standard exits unless advised by TWR of an alternative exit on first contact.
- Pilots unable to comply with HIRO shall advise Tower on first contact.
- All rapid exit taxiways (RET’s) are equipped with rapid taxiway indicator lights (RETIL).
- HIRO Procedure is not applicable to arrivals on Runway 34L.
2.4 Pilots are encouraged to make reference the following rapid exit taxiway configuration information to decide proper exit taxi speed.
| Design Speed | Radius | Exit Angle | Straight Distance on RET |
|---|
| 50 kt | 550 m | 29° | 270m |
After landing, aircraft must not stop on rapid exit taxiway but should continue taxi via the following taxi procedures, unless otherwise instructed by TWR:
2.5.1 If vacating runway 16L, continue via taxiway B southbound.
2.5.2 If vacating runway 34R, continue via taxiway A6 to hold short of taxiway C (if required).
2.5.3 If vacating runway 16R, continue via taxiway K southbound.
2.5.4 If vacating runway 16R and parking stand is planned on Apron 5, expect a northbound turn onto taxiway K.
3 High Intensity Runway Operation (HIRO) for departing aircraft (All Runways)
All checks should be completed when reaching the assigned holding point.
3.1.1 Line-up without delay when cleared by ATC.
3.1.2 React promptly to take-off clearance.
3.2 Whenever possible, use intersection for departures:
| Runway ID | Intersection | TORA (m) |
|---|
| 16L | A10 | 4082 |
| 34R | A2 | 4266 |
| 16R | L10 | 3614 |
| 34L | L2 | 3646 |
Note: Pilots shall advise GMC/TWR on first contact if unable to accept an intersection departure.
